Chapter 19

Clive Tatum, second cousin of William Tatum, the lodger stabbed to death in the house of Miles Cunningham, lived about ten miles from Frantham.

Mac, being tied up elsewhere had dispatched DC Yolanda Cooper, accompanied by PC Andy Nevins to see if he would talk to them informally. Mac had been unable to reach Clive Tatum by phone, so it was perfectly likely they would get there and he would not be in. Just as likely that he would not want to talk to the police, on spec, in which case they would have to try something more official. Mac and Kendall figured that Yolanda and Andy would make a good team for this task. Yolanda, Dave Kendall said, could talk her way into just about anywhere — though once she was in she could be a little too abrupt for some people — and Andy, more diffident in manner, just as acute when it came to observation, would balance her more acerbic qualities.

Of the two, Andy, though he’d not been in the force for quite as long, had the edge when it came to involvement in murder enquiries, his first having occurred just a few weeks after Mac’s arrival.

The two officers sat across the street looking at the very ordinary terraced house with a bright red front door and exuberantly planted hanging baskets swaying in what was quite a stiff breeze.

“Well, someone’s in,” Yolanda said as a figure moved past an upstairs window. She glanced at her watch. Ten fifteen. “Do writers get up early or do they sleep late like actors,” she wondered.

Andy’s look was quizzical. “How would I know,” he said. “I know Mrs Martin gets up early but the rest of them like to sleep in a bit. I’ve not met many writers and I don’t think journalists count.”

He watched as Yolanda put her head on one side and considered this. “Journalists are different,” she agreed. “And this Clive Tatum must be retired, I suppose, so do retired people get up late?”

“My nan gets up early,” Andy told her, opening his door. “I’ll bet yours does too.”

Yolanda rolled her eyes. She was good at that, Andy thought. “My nan on my mum’s side, I’ll swear she’s nocturnal. Watches the telly most of the night and then dozes off in the afternoon. But then, she spent most of her life on the nightshift, so . . .”

The street was quiet, well off the main road. Andy guessed the majority of traffic would be just the residents. He noticed a couple of curtains twitching as Yolanda knocked on the door. Guessed that police officers were probably a bit of a rarity round here where the houses, though modest, looked well cared for and there was a distinct absence of rubbish in the gutters. Andy was a bit of a connoisseur when it came to classifying streets.

The door opened and a short, rather round man peered out at them, clearly as taken aback as his neighbours by the sight of two young people, one in uniform and the other waving identification in his face.
